php CMS backend seperate from frontend

I've been asked to update a (largly static) webpage and add various CMS
features. The exact features are still being discussed, but web
updateable (by certain administrators) news and calendar are a must and
there are talks about forums, photo galleries and other stuff.

Anyway I've found a number of packages with these features, but they all
seem to tie the CMS features fairly tightly to a pre packaged frontend,
and I'm not allowed to signifigantly change the look or layout of the
current page (and to be fair I think the current page works, visually).

Are there any php packages that contain only the backend stuff in a way
that can be dropped into an exsisting site. I could write it all myself
or try to rip some relevant code out of other CMS systems, but I'm
wondering if someone can recomend something that would save me time and
effort.
