I will agree with pretty much everything Paul said, but I will add that
SHA-512 is also an approved successor, does offer more security, and on a
64-bit system is often significantly faster, and as such may be worthwhile
for your purposes if you spend a lot of time on 64-bit machines.
Additionally, I will urge you to make preparations to move to a new hash
function if/when the need arises for this my standard recommendation is
Whirlpool due to the fact that it is radically different from any of the
others.
