Yes, this (along with GnuPG) is about the best-known of legitimate
file/email encryption programs.

The trouble is that if the container gets corrupted, the repair person
has to deal with it just like with an unencrypted partition.

This is way too much hassle and patients/clients for the most part
would never put up with it. Use an SSL web server instead.
