Encryption effect on a HD lifespan?

Hi,

We use Utimaco Safeguard Encryption software on our laptops. I was
curious what happens with an encrypted drive when data is being read
from the HD? Is the hard drive working harder? Something must be
working harder when a HD is encrypted (vs not being encrypted). I'm
just curious if someone could provide some insight into this. I've been
looking but haven't come up with any suggestions.

The reason I'm asking is our HD's seem to be more prone to hard drive
errors and dead drives recently and wondering if implementing the
Encryption had anything to do with that.

Thanks,
